About Native Seeds Pty Ltd
Native Seeds Pty Ltd prides itself as being the producer of the highest quality of seed of Australian native grasses. The company is well qualified to provide excellent advice on all aspects of growing native grasses.
Native Seeds is a privately owned company which specialises in the production and sale of seed for selected species of Australian native grasses. The company was established in 1988 by Ian Chivers who has spent years growing and researching native grasses. In 2008 Ian received his PhD from the University of Melbourne. Native Seeds Pty Ltd is actively engaged in further research in collaboration with other scientists around Australia and this strong research focus and knowledge sets our company apart from others.
Native Seeds grows a range of Australian native grasses, some of which have been especially selected and grown for specific purposes. These special grass types are exclusively licensed to us by organisations such as the CSIRO, NSW Agriculture, the University of New England and NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation.
Native Seeds Pty Ltd grows Australian native grasses under cropping conditions in a diverse range of environments in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland to achieve maximum results. Once harvested, seed is usually cleaned, pelletised and taken to our bulk store in Melbourne ready for sale and distribution.
Some customers are concerned about provenance - ie where the seed has come from - and wish to have seed collected that is indigenous to the local area where it is to be used. While local provenance is relevant for trees and shrubs, it is not relevant for revegetation using native grasses because of the way grasses reproduce. It is often assumed that cross pollination is the normal fertilisation for all plants, but this is not so for native grasses. While there is considerable variety in the way Australian native grasses flower and produce seed, all the grasses studied to date produce the majority of their seed by some form of self-pollination and not by cross pollination. Many grasses including Wallaby grass and Weeping grass are self fertilising and spikelets are fertilised before they emerge from the leaf sheath.
Native Seeds is involved in an exciting collaborative project developing an Australian native grass producing a grain seed similar to rice suitable for human consumption. It's called Alpine Rice.
Recently Native Seeds has extended its range of products to include seeds of many Australian native plants. Info for grasses and plants |
